"Put Yourself in My Shoes" - An Activity with the UVM Presidents´Office
Through the University Inclusion Program, the Universidad Viña del Mar has been working to strengthen their internal infrastructure so as to ensure the rights of all students to equal opportunities and a high quality education. This includes improving the management of Teaching and Learning as well as promoting an Inclusive Culture that recognizes and values diversity. This initiative is under the direction of the new Inclusion Unit.
In order to raise awareness and promote an inclusive culture at UVM, the Inclusion Unit has organized a series of hands-on activities where everyone at the university can shortly experience what it is like living with a disability and how it affects day-to-day activities. These hands-on activities are being carried out in the classroom, with administrators at their desks, and and other faculty and staff members throughout the univeristy.
The first of these activities took place on May 16th with the University President, Vice Presidents, Provost, and their secretaries. Participants were asked to choose to experience either a visual impairment or the loss of their dominant hand and then create a small craft project. The participants then went around to compare results and discuss how they felt. This activity raised awareness for the participants as well as understand the importance of having inclusion as part of the university´s strategic plan.
